Menopause is actually when the female body, stops having monthly periods and, you stop being able to fall pregnant naturally.
This happens because the ovaries stop producing eggs and as a result, levels of the hormones that the ovaries produce, which are (oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone) those levels fall.
So, full menopause is actually defined, by not having a monthly cycle, for 12 consecutive months.
Menopause usually happens between the age of 40 to 55. But, it can be earlier or it can be even later. An example of early menopause is, if you’ve had a hysterectomy (which is an operation to remove your womb), you might well have had your ovaries removed at the same time and if so, what happens is, you’ll immediately go into full menopause. This is known as surgical menopause and can happen to women of any age. So a surgical procedure can bring on early menopause.
I just want to mention something called Andropause: This might interest the men out there. Andropause is the male version of menopause, while women experience a declined in female hormones, men also experienced a decline in testosterone levels as they age.
After the age of 30, men's testosterone levels, decline by about 1% per year.
A study that was done back in 2011 showed that over 47% of men had low testosterone.
Now labs are actually having to keep lowering the average ranges for testosterone when testing.
You also have Peri-menopause which is the phase leading up to the menopause when a woman’s hormone balance starts to change, your ovaries don’t suddenly stop working they actually gradually slow down and you may begin to experience menopausal symptoms. Some women can start this as early as their twenties but for others as late as into their 50s.
More on menopause and the symptoms next time.
